At the annual Festival of Words event at North Star Academy Friday, students wiggled their way out of the typical school schedule and into the wondrous world of words.
After two weeks of mandatory state standardized testing, the Festival of Words allowed the students to explore other creative realms such as journalism, music and animals through various workshops.
Students were able to travel the world through words, learning Chinese culture and art as well as Indian words and art.
Patch Editor Stacie Chan was able to teach a morning workshop about the changing journalism and media landscape and ultimately how to write an article.
The middle school students eagerly participated in the conversation, from defining what “news” is to how social media impacts their media consumption. There was so much conversation and interaction that the allotted hour and a half session was not nearly enough time.
The North Star students were eager to digest all the new information as well as share their new skill of writing in the “inverted pyramid” style, typical of most journalistic articles.
