Jail Protesters Gather at Redwood City Courthouse

A coalition of groups opposing construction of the new jail in Redwood City have vowed to take their fight to the Board of Supervisors.

A coalition of groups opposing the construction of a new county jail who have to take their fight to the Board of Supervisors gathered in front of the San Mateo County Government Center on Tuesday morning.

A press release issued earlier this week indicated they would use the public comments portion of today’s meeting to voice their opposition to the new jail.

The protesters want the county to halt funding for a jail construction project that will cost San Mateo County taxpayers an estimated $145 million to $160 million. They're demanding the board immediately strike $44.2 million slated for the project in this year’s budget.
