Man Accused of Beating Another to Death Near Redwood City

When deputies arrived at the scene Monday night, they found a 46-year-old man lying motionless on the ground with his alleged assailant standing nearby, sheriff's officials said.

A 53-year-old man allegedly beat another man to death in unincorporated Redwood City on Monday night, San Mateo County sheriff's officials said Tuesday.

Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of two men fighting in the 3100 block of Middlefield Road at about 8:15 p.m., according to sheriff's spokeswoman Deputy Rebecca Rosenblatt.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they found a 46-year-old man lying motionless on the ground with his alleged assailant, Paul Ahern, standing nearby, Rosenblatt said.

Deputies administered CPR but they were unable to revive the victim, a Redwood City resident, Rosenblatt said.

Deputies arrested Ahern, a Redwood City resident, on suspicion of murder, according to Rosenblatt.

The San Mateo County coroner's office has not yet publicly released the victim's identity.
