A man who tried to hide $12,000 he had stolen from multiple Peninsula homes from police by shoving it between his buttocks now has a bench warrant issued in his name after failing to appear in court Tuesday.
Gabriel Sykes Carter, 42, and Wyatt King, 34, both of Oakland, and Raphaelle Jones, 23, of Citrus Heights, were arrested in the process of ransacking and burglarizing a home in the 400 block of Pine Street in Redwood City on Oct. 12, 2012. A neighbor called the police when he saw three men he didn't recognize entering the home.
Redwood City Police responded immediately and surrounded the home, then took all three suspects into custody without incident, the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office reported.
Upon searching the home, Redwood City Police told the District Attorney's Office said they found "the entire home ransacked," and also discovered a sack containing stolen property from a home in Belmont that had been burglarized earlier that day.
In addition, Jones' vehicle was located nearby, containing a large stash of marijuana.
However, it was the body cavity searches that are especially of note in this crime.
When police searched the suspects, they said they found $12,000 in cash "between Jones' buttocks," and $700 in cash concealed in King's shoe.
Both King and Carter appeared in court separately in December, each pleading no contest to charges against them. According to the District Attorney's Office, the court denied probation for both defendants and sentenced them each to two years in prison in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
Jones, who has the biggest charges against him of the three, was scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on Tuesday, but failed to appear. A bench warrant was issued for his arrest, and his $150,000 bail was forfeited.
However, Jones' attorney, Scott Newbould, told the court Tuesday that Jones had been arrested in another county and was being held in custody there.
