Rotary Club Raises $100K for Charity

Local club will make donation next Tuesday.

The Rotary Club of Redwood City has raised $104,000 for local charities, and will spread the wealth at its next meeting.

Club members will donate the proceeds of raffle ticket sales to 13 local charity organizations during their gathering July 24, at the Old Spaghetti Factory in Redwood City.

The Sheriff's Activity League led all fundraisers by selling nearly $21,000 worth of tickets sold. Pets in Need made the second most by raising more than $17,000 and Family Connections was the third highest in collecting more than $16,000.

The lucky raffle ticket was sold to Barbara Schaarschmidt of Soquel, who will have the choice to receive either $18,000 in cash or a 2012 Honda Insight LX.

According to spokesman Pete Liebengood, all previous winners have accepted the money.

Club president Lilia Ledezma celebrated the fundraising effort, which generated nearly $20,000 more for charity than last year.

“Rotarians work hard at making this event a success, and this year they’ve outdone themselves," she said in a prepared statement.
