Redwood Symphony to Perform Sweeney Todd

The Redwood Symphony will be performing Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street twice this summer in the main theatre of Cañada College in Redwood City.

Maestro Eric Kujawsky will be conducting the performance, which will feature a fully symphony orchestra, soloists, and a trick barber chair.

“In my lifetime, I have experienced great shocks of artistic recognition, moments that seemed to instantly open up new vistas of understanding,” Kujawsky said.

“My very first experience with Stephen Sondheim’s music was much like an earthquake. It left me reeling. Sondheim could well be one of our greatest composers, up there with Gershwin, Copland and Bernstein.

Sweeney has been done by many opera houses, and we aim to give it the full symphonic treatment!” he added.

The lead roles will be portrayed by Walter Mayes as Sweeney Todd while Cami Thompson will act the part of Mrs. Lovett.

The cast also includes Michael Morris as Judge Turpin, Maya Kherani as Johanna,  Justin Marsh as Anthony, Paul Zawilski as Beadle, Bill Welch as Pirelli, Bobby Brice as Toby, and Mia Fryvecind Gimenez as the beggar woman.

The Redwood Symphony is an orchestra of volunteers who perform contemporary and classical pieces.  An example of their work is a recent performance of the Berloiz Requiem at the Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco.

This June the Redwood Symphony will perform Sweeney Todd twice.  The first performance starts at 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 1. The second one begins at 2 p.m. on Sunday June 2.  Both will be in the Main Theatre of Cañada College, 4200 Farm Hill Blvd. in Redwood City, California.

Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.   Parking is free on the weekends.
