Mia Hua was on her way to ballet class Tuesday afternoon when her mom, Nancy, decided to treat her to an ice cream cone along the way. So, the duo stopped into the San Carlos Baskin-Robbins store on El Camino Real at 3:30 p.m.
Little did they know that seconds after purchasing Mia's single scoop of "Trick- Oreo-Treat," the Redwood City mother and daughter would be presented with a giant $1,000 check, plus a Keurig coffee maker and a year's supply of K-Cups, Keurig's pre-measured coffee pods.
The give-away was part of Dunkin' Brands (the parent company of Baskin- Robbins) introduction of its Dunkin' Donuts K-Cups to the West Coast. There were five other similar giveaways in California on Tuesday.
"The San Carlos B&R was selected because it's been here for over 25 years and it's a great store," said Jamie Smith, store supervisor.
"Lots of San Carlos kids grow up coming here, then some of them work here," Smith added.
Dunkin' Brands will be selling the coffee makers and K-Cups at its Baskin-Robbins stores throughout California.
"This is our first week selling K-Cups at Baskin-Robbins, so we're giving away $1,000 and a Keurig coffee machine and a year's supply of K-Cups to one lucky customer," Smith said.
Smith said the customer who made their purchase closet to 3:31 p.m. (a play off of Baskin-Robbins 31-Flavors) would be the winner.
As Nancy and Mia made their purchase, Smith informed them of their lucky timing and "Coney," the life-sized B&R walking ice cream cone, presented them with a large check in the amount of $1,000.
Asked if she had ever won anything before, Nancy said no, but that this was "Excellent!"
She added that the money would come in handy for an upcoming family vacation.
Mia, a student at Redwood City's North Star Academy, seemed to relish the spotlight, shaking hands with Coney and the store staff and worrying a bit about being late for ballet class.
