Applications Due: 5th Annual Hometown Holidays Community Tree Decorating Contest

Today is the deadline for applications to enter Redwood City's Hometown Holidays Community Tree Decorating Contest.

The contest encourages downtown businesses to display holiday trees. It is open to community organizations, businesses, schools and youth groups. Each group can enter once.

Applicants will receive a 5-7 foot artificial tree with lights, as well as an 8.5-by-11-foot sign with the group's name. Applicants must decorate the tree with a minimum of 80 ornaments and provide a skirt to cover the box on which the tree stands.

Awards will be given in three categories: youth and school organizations, community organizations and businesses. A $200 first-place prize and $125 second-place prize will be awarded in each. Redwood City residents can vote for their favorite tree in various downtown locations, which have not yet been announced.

Not everyone who applies will receive a tree to decorate. There is a limited number of trees and they will be handed out on a first-come, first-serve basis.
