RWC Student Finalist in High School Writing Contest

Sierra Nevada College, a four-year, private university in Incline Village, Nev., selected original work by Allison Paley, of Redwood City, Calif., as one of its top winners in the 2013 High School Writing Competition.  Paley was honored as a finalist in the fiction category for “The Door.”

Sierra Nevada College professors and editors evaluated over 700 submissions to choose the top winners for the 2013 High School Writing Contest, a national competition that produced exceptional stories, poems and creative nonfiction from high school juniors and seniors.

“The quality of submissions this year was seriously impressive. Narrowing down the winners was extremely difficult,” said June Saraceno, Sierra Nevada College English program chair. “Many submissions exhibited stylistic innovation, skillful language use, and engaging development of theme. We were thrilled to see this level of craft from high school writers.”

Winning submissions in the categories of poetry, fiction and nonfiction came from students across the United States, including Massachusetts, New Mexico, Michigan and Florida.  First-place winners in each category received $500; second-place, $250; and third-place, $100, plus eligibility for a $20,000 scholarship to Sierra Nevada College, located in North Lake Tahoe. The Locals Prize honored student writers from Nevada and California with a $100 prize.
