Letter to the Editor: The Situation at Pete's Harbor

A husband and wife who still remain at Pete's Harbor describe the situation they are enduring, and how it has affected the husband's deteriorating health.

Last night (Thursday, March 14) I brought my husband, Buckley Stone, home from the VA (Veterans Affairs) Hospital in Palo Alto.

I rushed him to the emergency room there eight days ago because he was having great difficulty breathing. Fortunately, the trip took only 20 minutes, as we were both really scared.

A few days before that, my husband helped his best friend move his sailboat - which has a broken motor - from Pete's Harbor to another marina. It was a challenging, windy day, and it was taxing on us all, but mostly on my husband.

There are only a handful of us live-aboards left at Pete's Harbor. It's been heartbreaking, infuriating, and sickening to watch a community dispersed, thrown away, and discounted like so much garbage at the hands of the owner, Paula Uccelli, and her harbormaster, Giorgio Garilli.

Bullying and scare tactics have compelled some people to make dangerous trips in unsafe vessels, others to endure substantial loss of business and property, and others, to take risks to their health and well-being.

My husband moved to Pete's Harbor 20 years ago, in order to live affordably on his sailboat, and to be close to the VA Hospital, as he is 100% disabled with a severely compromised immune system. As of today, we don't have a substitute living situation for his particular physical and financial needs.

In the next two weeks, my husband has five appointments at the VA, for his continued care, and two appointments at Superior Court, to be sued and evicted from his community in Redwood City.
