Redwood City Preps for Coastal Cleanup

Redwood City residents can help clean up litter on Saturday during the annual Fall Cleanup Day/California Coastal Cleanup Day.

Participants are asked to meet at the city’s Public Works Building (1400 Broadway) at 8:30 a.m. a.m. 

The 9 a.m. to noon cleanup will focus on Redwood Creek, Brewster Avenue, Marshall Street, the Union Cemetery, Whipple Avenue, Winslow Street, Woodside Road, among other sites where debris finds its way into coastal waterways.

A free breakfast will be served at 8:30, and a free barbecue lunch will be offered to participants at noon.

The cleanup is sponsored by San Mateo Credit Union, Recology San Mateo County, San Mateo Countywide Water Pollution Prevention Program, Shinnyo-en, and SIMS Metal Management.

Recology is also sponsoring a compost giveaway at the Public Works Services parking lot on the same day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Up to one cubic yard of free compost (that's about three garbage cans full) will be offered to each Redwood City resident on a supply-limited basis.

Compost is an excellent addition to existing soil, and also makes a great groundcover to help with weed and erosion control.
