Mr. Foley is correct! I wonder if the kiddies also learned that the founder of Earth Day, IRARead More EINHORN, is in prison for the murder of his girlfriend and the hiding of her rotting corpse in a locked trunk!!! Wonder if the poor victims sitting in the earth sciences at the middle school ever hear the truth!
John Foley April 20, 2013 at 12:50 am
I wonder if Al (private jet) Gore celebrates green day. Do the children know earth day had aRead More similar celebration in Nazi Germany? Of course not.....why teach real history.
Michael Craig April 11, 2013 at 03:38 pm
like every other year Principals are changing at Ralston
Michael Craig April 11, 2013 at 03:37 pm
Why the revolving door on Principals at Ralston? Maybe if only one Principal was removed or changedRead More but it seems
Judi Mahoney April 5, 2013 at 03:48 am
Very brave of you ms. S....the district and the real estate/media do not want this dirty littleRead More reality out there!!!! Thank you!

Why not reclaim the old elementary school now being served as an alternative High School, Redwood HSRead More on Old County Road. I am certain my head must have been in the fog but do not recall the residents of nearby neighborhoods of Redwood being ask if we wanted the program that is now being conducted there. The crime rate in our neighborhood has soared since its inception with students scouting the neighborhood on their lunch breaks and text messaging photo's of our homes, recording our schedules, only to become a victim of a residential burglary, robbery and confronted with guns. These break-ins are never covered in the news because of the zip code we reside in and due to a recent study with figures touting Redwood City real estate sales made a gain of 25% last year. Published crime rate statistics for our beautiful city are grossly misrepresented and challenge our already overworked, under staffed police department. Yes, I for one would prefer to have the new Charter school present in our neighborhood instead of high school students who don't want to be there and have brought this not welcome element to our front door or back door, however they decide to break into our homes!

Great article !! I have been to one of the plays before and they did an amazing job.
John Foley April 4, 2013 at 07:40 pm
If Mr. Camacho is a RWC teacher, he will surely be hunted for voicing his cohesive opinion. TheRead More district does not care about the neighborhood. Just wait until you see what middle schoolers bring to your 'hood. Changes need to be made at Bradford.

Buck, I'm not sure which bond measures are used to fund capital expenses (state or local); I justRead More wanted to point out that PTA isn't allowed to pay for those kinds of improvements. I had to google Obama phone, but did find out that they are "basic phones", and not smart phones (unless you want to pay for an upcharge). And to Lou's point about serving the school community first, I don't think there are any negative comments about the sign by parents whose kids actually attend Roosevelt. I would wager that the majority of families that attend Roosevelt welcome the new sign, and see it as money well spent, and those families are the ones that would be the most vocal about misspending of PTA funds.
Lou Covey, The Local Motive April 3, 2013 at 03:53 pm
Buck, I can jump into this because communication is my business. There is no one way to effectivelyRead More communicate with an audience. There are not two, or three or four ways either. In order to effectively communicate with your audience in today's media saturated world is to use as many ways as you possibly can. The city currently uses email, press releases, websites, video and snail mail to get out information about meetings and hearings and events, yet the majority of the population still tunes out all of it until a decision is made and then everyone screams that they weren't told. Everyone has their own selective means for accepting information, and most of the mentally screen out anything and everything on a daily basis. While this sign may not be the most effective means for getting in the face of parents and students, it is one effective way of doing it. The question that needs to be asked is, which is more important: attending to the needs of hundreds of families using the school, or pleasing the aesthetic sensitivities of a few residents?
John Foley April 4, 2013 at 07:45 pm
See how many RWC classrooms are sheer pandemonium due to student behavior!!
net reality April 1, 2013 at 10:22 pm
This is so sad. However Parents can make a difference. 1) Most school foundations haveRead More fundraising teams that enable schools to hire many teachers to fill the need. Redwood City would benefit hugely from better fundraising 2) Scale back Prop 13: remove the loopholes for businesses, and the funding will slowly start to return to normal.
Jennifer van der Kleut (Editor) March 30, 2013 at 10:37 am
H.L., that's very true. As Shelly Masur told me, really the average in RCSD is around 31.
Judi Mahoney March 23, 2013 at 07:36 pm
Hey--anyone know how many of the original donated PING golf sets missing from Kennedy Middle School?Read More Hmmmmm?
Alison Liberatore April 15, 2013 at 12:09 pm
That doesn't seem to be the case, actually. The English speakers and the Spanish speakers both doRead More quite well academically. I guess I don't understand what your concern is if all students are succeeding and the program is so popular that they are creating a second school.
Mary McLinden April 13, 2013 at 03:49 pm
I'm not saying it's counterproductive to anyone's education. I'm saying it's not the program we wereRead More told it was going to be when they first opened. Your statement actually implies that the program is counterproductive to the education of the primary English speakers for whom it was designed because THEY are not learning to read and write in their own language first.
Alison Liberatore April 11, 2013 at 02:52 pm
I don't understand how benefiting Spanish speakers, too, is remotely counter-productive. AllRead More evidence shows that Spanish speaking students who learn to read and write in their own language first, will do better academically in the long run. Isn't our goal to benefit all of our children? I hope so.

Wow. I teach in a San Jose high school (live in RWC) and our averages are above 34. Class sizeRead More really impacts performance. It's challenging to teach in a classroom of 34+ teens when they come in at different academic levels and are dealing with the challenges in a low income environment. (Resources, lack of food, concentration, etc)
Palomar Parkman March 21, 2013 at 02:16 pm
I do not believe that class size in high school is a significant factor in student performance orRead More quality of education when it varies by only a few students/class. As we all know, College class size can be an order of magnitude larger. Much more important is the quality of the teachers and curriculum as well as the demographic of the student body.

Way to go girls!!! Great job representing Sequoia! As a former SHS cheerleader, I couldn't beRead More happier for your accomplishment! :)
P Ferrando March 20, 2013 at 07:21 pm
Awesome job ! So proud of the Cheer Team.Great to have you represent Redwood City!

An acheivement for those involved will last a lifetime. Keep the spirit and you'll hold theRead More confidence to know you can succeed at dreams that may at times appear unobtainable.
Occupy Redwood City March 21, 2013 at 12:44 pm
San Mateo County is intending to borrow millions of dollars off their good credit rating to buildRead More and operate a new jail: http://www.smdailyjournal.com/article_preview.php?id=1765247 The article also states that the county has already eliminated 727 jobs in the last four years. Meanwhile, teachers are fighting for better pay. There's something deeply wrong with the system here when large boondoggles like a jail motivate the county to borrow millions of dollars while they turn a blind eye to their own workers, actual hardworking people fighting tooth and nail for pay and benefits.
Occupy Redwood City March 20, 2013 at 04:14 pm
Can the county's office of education make use any of the general fund money that Measure A, whichRead More passed last November, is projected to bring in? Considering that Measure A is a sales tax which hits working families the hardest it would be nice to see that tax money go back to our county's own workforce.

These teachers deserve more than 1%, open the reserves. Who else would work 5-8 years without aRead More raise--particularly a highly specialized and trained union member in charge of children? Several members of my family have been involved in both sides of special education so I know the amazing work that is done, what a difference it makes in people's lives and how much education and re-education it takes to make that difference. Give the children and the teachers what they deserve, open the reserves.

Great show Friday! If you can get to see the show tonight, DO IT!!!

Anyone that has spent the time reading all of these posts has probably come to two conclusions, theRead More first being that this is a waste of time and the second being that you are all in desperate need of a reality check. Seriously, go out into the real world and explore reality. Step away from your computers and find out what is really going on in the world. Your posts are all very narrow minded and self-serving. Please stop posting just to feel like you have an obligation to let the world hear you. If you aren't actively engaged in the process and truly have something intellectual to contribute then just move on. I'm guilty too, I've posted a couple of comments and I'm afraid that I've contributed to the neurotic behaviors of some of my fellow posters. In fact, someone posted about their emotional instability and I'm saddened that my posts may have enticed that person into responding on this forum. Please help these people by refraining from posting as I plan to do. My account is being deleted this evening.

Like any school, there are teachers who sometimes do things without thinking it thru. Please refrainRead More from making blanket condemning statements about all teachers at RAM. This isn't son's first year-he thrives under the guidance of dedicated, qualified teachers.

Well done and the extra credit thing is too much. Next thing you know kids will be coming home fromRead More school fearful of Global Warming as it wouldn't shock me if the school is teaching the kids that Belmont will be underwater in 50 years due to their parents Corporate Greed and excessive carbon usage.
Judi Mahoney March 23, 2013 at 07:47 pm
I HEAR you Mr. Craig---you are correct---illegals have no right to our money. Wrapping Jose in theRead More euphemism of undocumented is a joke.
Sarah Adams March 14, 2013 at 12:50 am
You are white male whose parents make too much money for you to get student loans and you don't haveRead More the grades or athletic skill for scholarships. You will probably have to get a job and pay for your own education. Once you're working and out of your parent's house you will be able to get your own student loans unless you make too much money to do so. You can attend community college part time.
Michael Craig March 13, 2013 at 03:53 pm
I am happy that Jose is a successful journalist but I wonder if he received govt. aid for CollegeRead More that was meant for a legal citizen? Was someone born in America displaced from receiving student aid? As a Caucasian male born in America, I find it sad that it is nearly impossible for me to get ANY student loans or government assistance to get a college education. Ironically though, it seems that some people can come to America illegally and get money very easily if their surname sounds like they are a minority. Is it any wonder that US hi-tech companies have to continually get workers with science and technology training from other countries? We don't even give any money to our own citizens to get higher education but in the name of political correctness-give many foreign students financial aid or in some cases-a free ride. Again, kudos to Jose but maybe he should talk to Americans who did not get any government assistance and ask them if they think if it is really fair and equitable to get no help from their own government? If Jose did get free money from the government for College-maybe he should do the right thing and pay it back since he received money under false pretenses that he was American. Sorry he did not find out until he was 15 but if he got any government money-then he was lying on his application for aid.Also-Why is Jose charging a fee for his talk and how is he able to set up a Non-Profit in America as a non-citizen?
