Cancer Awareness Day Planned at Roy Cloud School

Students, staff and faculty will have a chance to participate in various activities that will help support the battle against the disease.

Students, faculty and staff a Roy Cloud School in Redwood City are planning a Cancer awareness Day on Friday, Nov. 1 to honor those in the community who are battling the disease.

The event theme will be, “Wear it Pink and Hair That Bring Hope.”

The school’s ASB/Leadership class will be coordinating classroom activities and asking students, staff, and teachers to wear something pink. Local hairstylists from several salons including San Carlos’ Salon Gossip and Burlingame’s Mondi will provide free haircuts to all students and staff willing to donate ten inches or more of their hair. Hair will be donated through Wigs for Kids and Pantene Beautiful Lengths. Other students will make donations to The American Cancer Society and have pink extensions or their hair sprayed pink.

A Tribute Wall will be set up where family or friends who have been affected by cancer will be honored. Additionally, elementary teachers will be provided with supplementary lessons to increase cancer awareness and the middle school science classes will be visited by Kathy Smith of the Stanford Cancer Center.

“The idea to have a Cancer Awareness Day was the brainchild of eighth grader, Trevor Collet,” said Catherine Gaston, the school’s activities director. Gaston added that “Most students I have worked with would have chosen to have a Crazy Hair Day or something along those lines. The ASB class this year is quite special, focusing on building community and respect. Most of us have been touched by cancer. Both of my parents are cancer survivors so this is personal for me too. The stories are inspirational; and yes, I will be cutting my hair too!”

Dana Hardester, the school’s principal, fully supports the idea and the community’s involvement in it. “I am really excited for Cancer Awareness Day. The students have been working really hard on this, and it is great to see all the community members that have gotten involved,” Hardester said. “It is hard to find a family that has not been touched by cancer in some way. This is such a positive event. I love that this was a student’s idea and the class just ran with it.  It is great to see young people working to make a difference.”

Eighth grade student Trevor Collet, who is also an ASB senator and Boy Scout, summed up the reason for the program the best: “It’s important to be aware of cancer so people understand how different your life is with it and to help kids live a normal life. We may be young, but we can make a big difference.”
