Photo: Latino Group Presents Giant Check to Library Foundation

The Latino Community Council raised $20,700 for the Redwood City Library Foundation from its annual Kermes & Dia del Niño Festival.

The Latino Community Council of Redwood City presented the Library Foundation with a giant check of $20,700 at Monday night’s city council meeting. The money will purchase children’s books, videos and music for the Fair Oaks library.

Proceeds were raised through the annual spring festival Kermes & Dia del Niño back on April 29. More than 1,000 people attended the festival that featured vendors, games, arts and crafts and various art performances.

“We are proud and honored to have been a part of the creation of such a worthwhile event,” said Arnoldo Arreola, President of the LCCRC, “The LCCRC will continue to find ways to give back to Redwood City, while continuing to motivate and inspire our Latino community to participate in civic engagement.”

Last year, the festival raised $16,000, for a total of $36,700 raised in the festival’s two-year history.

“It’s been a fantastic partnership working with the Latino Community Council to find ways to make the Fair Oaks Library the best that it can be,” said Matt Jacobs, a director of the Redwood City Library Foundation.

The Fair Oaks Branch Library serves the North Fair Oaks neighborhood which is comprised of predominantly Latino immigrants. In the four schools in the Fair Oaks area, 94% of the students are designated socio-economically disadvantaged. The Library focuses on family literacy, supporting school success, and access to computers. Additionally, it serves as one of the few public spaces in the neighborhood.

The Latino Community Council of Redwood City (LCCRC) is an advocacy group working for the advancement of Latinos and their issues through civic and community engagement.
