Woodside High School’s Athlete of the Week is Ryan Yedniak, a senior playing his third year of varsity basketball for the Wildcats.  Yedniak led Woodside to a 42-40 victory over Carlmont High School on Friday night, scoring 19 points while playing tenacious defense, forcing numerous turnovers.

The 6’5” Yedniak led all scorers and produced 18 of his points by downing six three point shots.  Besides the usual array of teammates Yedniak is joined by his younger brother, Evan, who is a freshman on Woodside’s varsity.  In discussing goals for the season Ryan believes, “the team can make it to the CCS playoffs and advance in the tournament”, given the Wildcat’s size and shooting ability.

Beyond his impressive basketball skills Yedniak is lighting up the scoreboard in the classroom as well, maintaining a 4.0 GPA while taking a rigorous course load of AP classes, including physics, literature and statistics this semester.

In addition, Ryan is working hard on his senior thesis, something all Wildcats must complete to participate in graduation, analyzing the impact of Jackie Robinson on the civil rights movement.

Ryan’s hard work in the classroom and on the playing court will pay dividends next year, when he hopes to attend UCLA, UC Berkeley or USC.
