Sequoia Union High School District Now Boasts Two Debate Teams

Capitalizing on the success of the Sequoia High School Speech and Debate Team, Carlmont High School’s growing Debate Team has joined the Coast Forensic League.  At a recent league tournament, both Sequoia and Carlmont sent fourteen debaters, an unprecedented number for the teams.

Six pairs of debaters from Sequoia have gone undefeated over the last few years, and now Carlmont has also had a team go undefeated.  Juniors Elias Sebti and Zach Govani, one of Carmlmont’s Junior Varsity Public Forum pairs, went undefeated at the most recent Coast Forensic League tournament on November 10.  This was a major accomplishment for the young team.  At the same tournament, two pairs from Sequoia’s team had an impressive 3 and 1 record in Varsity Parliamentary debate, and one Varsity Lincoln-Douglas debater had a 3 and 1 record.

Sequoia has also begun sending its members to prestigious invitational tournaments.  Senior Ellen Singer and Junior Evan Hart competed in the National Parliamentary Debate Invitational Tournament on November 16 and 17 at Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland.  While most league tournaments consist of four rounds of debate on a single day, this national invitational tournament consisted of 7 grueling rounds.

Sequoia and Carlmont compete against many other teams in the Coast Forensic League that are well-established and have had many more years of experience.  Their early successes bode well for the future of both teams.
