Sequoia High Girls' Tennis Kills the Competition

A wrap-up of results from games the girls' tennis team from Sequoia High played over the past week.

Sequoia 7, El Camino 0 (at Sequoia):

The Sequoia girls' tennis team rolled over El Camino 7-0 in a Peninsula Athletic League match Thursday, Oct. 11 at home.

Freshman Sadie Rehn, junior Julie Self and seniors Natalie Clark and Rebecca Sand swept the singles matches. Alex Hilbert and Lauren Newman won at No. 1 doubles. The teams of Sesilia Lauese and Sarah Cunningham at No. 2 and Raveen Johal and Carolyn Burtt at No. 3 all won in straight sets. The Cherokees improve to 8-3 in PAL and hold on to third in Ocean Division play. 

Singles -- Rehn d. Chan 6-0, 6-2; Self d. Lee 6-4, 6-2; Clark d. Cu 6-1, 6-0; Sand d. Magsaysay 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Doubles -- Hilbert-Newman d. San Felipe-Chandra; Lauese-Cunningham d. Panganiban-Tran 6-0, 6-2; Johal-Burtt d. DeLaRosa-Lerpwel 6-1, 6-0.

 

Sequoia 5, Westmoor 2:

On senior day, the Sequoia girls' tennis team defeated Westmoor 5-2 in a Peninsula Athletic League-Ocean Division match Tuesday, Oct. 16 at home. 

Seniors Sarah Ciambrone and Natalie Clark picked up victories at Nos. 2 and 4 singles for Sequoia. The teams of Alex Hilbert-Lauren Newman, Sesilia Lauese-Sarah Cunningham and Raveen Johal-Carolyn Burtt swept the doubles matches. The Cherokees improve to 8-3 in league and 8-6 overall.  

Singles -- Mia Merced (W) d. Sadie Rehn 6-4, 2-6, 6-0; Sarah Ciambrone (S) d. Jolana Chan 7-5, 6-4; Soe Han Tha (W) d. Julie Self 6-4, 1-6, 6-2;  Natalie Clark (S) d. Denise Mangalino 6-4, 6-4.

Doubles -- Alex Hilbert/Lauren Newman (S) d. Faustina -Christina Nyaung 6-0, 6-1; Sesilia Lauese/Sarah Cunningham (S) d. Yvonne Ng/Aileen Miranda 7-5, 6-1; Raveen Johal/Carolyn Burtt d. Lillian Lee-Madeline Navarro 6-3, 6-3. 

 

Sequoia 7, Capuchino 0:

 The Sequoia girls' tennis team defeated Capuchino 7-0 in a Peninsula Athletic League-Ocean Division match Thursday, Oct. 18  on the road.With the victory, the Cherokees improve to 10-3 in league and 10-6 overall.  

Singles -- Sarah Ciambrone d. Iris Tso 6-1, 6-1; Sadie Rehn d. Eva Liang 6-0, 6-0; Julie Self def.; Natalie Clark def.

Doubles -- Lauren Newman-Alex Hilbert d. Layali Salameh-Kimmy White; Sesilia Lauese-Sarah Cunningham d. Elizabeth Ramirez-Raymie Michael; Raveen Johal-Carolyn Burtt d. Daisy Ruiz-Emily Savedra.

Laurel, your article hit home with me, also. I often tell people how happy I am to live in RedwoodRead More City. Your post describes some of the reasons why very well. Our town is a real community. As you described so well, there is a wonderful ease of connecting with people here and a sense that we can all be who we are and be welcome here. That is very special. Also, I feel that the wide variety of Redwood City's activities (like the Salsa Festival, but also all the remarkable diversity of events that happen all the time in Courthouse Square, cool events at the libraries, the Farmer's Markets, etc.) make this a vibrant, fun place to live. There are always interesting things to do here, most of which are either free or are very affordable. I feel like RWC's elected and appointed officials and other employees who provide key services for the citizens here (teachers, police, firefighters, librarians, Parks and Recreation Dept. employees, utilities employees, etc.) really care about its residents. Not only are there constantly fun things to do that are free or affordable, there are also many classes and education opportunities to support our needs in so many ways (looking for a job, preparing for an earthquake, etc.). It feels like a well-run city. I have only lived here a few years, but I am quite happy here and am very glad to be a resident of Redwood City. Thanks for writing this article!

I lived in Manhattan and found it difficult to find the funds to fly home for visits for many years, but i would when I could, and when I moved to Los Angeles it was easier to get home for a visit but I never ever thought I'd live here again. In 1999 my parents passed and the old house sat vacant for a couple of years and then I had a brilliant idea....why not move home! I sold my house in LA and moved back to RWC in 2003 and I've NEVER BEEN HAPPIER! One day you too may wonder away - for your career or perhaps your husbands career, but just know...Redwood City is always here to welcome you back. Thomas Wolfe said "you can't go home again" - but you can!
