Sequoia Grad Named 'Queen of the Festival'

Guzman's $10,000 scholarship will help her study at Notre Dame de Namur University. She wants to study medicine.

Sequoia High grad Nereyda Guzman was announced Tuesday as the winner of a $10,000 scholarship from the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office and the title of Queen of the Festival celebrated at the North Fair Oaks Community Festival,which takes place on Saturday, Aug. 25th on Middlefield Road between 1st and 5th Aves. between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Karla Adame, Summit Preparatory senior, was named second runner-up  and will receive $4,000 in scholarships. Adame also plans to attend Notre Dame de Namur.

The Queen of the Festival Scholarship program is an annual event affiliated with the North Fair Oaks Community Festival, which is a multicultural event that raises money for the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Youth Programs. The San Mateo County Sheriff's Youth Programs has funded these scholarships for the past seven years.  

The Festival is a day of live entertainment, arts and crafts, food, children’s activities, and  a parade. The big event of the day is the crowning of the Queen of the Festival.

Sabor del Festival Preview Party is Thursday, Aug. 22,  from 5:30pm to 8:00pm.  It will be held at the San Mateo County History Museum .  

This is a colorful and festive evening as we “preview” the sights and sounds of Sunday’s festival – music, dance, incredible food and wines and spirits from Latin America.
