Redwood City School Gets New Hydration Station

Stanford basketball players Randie Chasson and Aaron Bright assisted San Mateo County Supervisor Warren Slocum in Redwood City, California Friday in a team effort to get kids to drink more water.

The Redwood City Education Foundation partnered with the McKinley Institute of Technology to give 400 students and school faculty members free reusable water bottles.

The initiative is part of a campaign called “Drink Water First for Thirst!” that was sponsored by a $50,000 grant from The Coca-Cola Foundation.

“The campaign encourages students to stay hydrated during the day, and reach for water first before sweet drinks or soda,” said Elaine Park, Redwood City Education Foundation spokesperson.

“Drinking water as a first beverage of choice is a key component of keeping kids healthier and better able to study and learn,” Park told Patch.

The event was held in conjunction with the school’s Lap-A-Thon, so the kids could get a workout and use their refillable water bottles.  With additional support from the Sequoia Healthcare District’s Healthy Schools Initiative, a hydration station was installed in the school.
