Nesbit Preparing for Transitional Kindergarten Class

There are currently 21 students enrolled in the Belmont-Redwood Shores School District's new transitional kindergarten program.

When the new Belmont-Redwood Shores school year starts on Aug. 29, 21 young students will find cubbies, desks, chairs and teacher waiting for them in their new (TK) class at .

Pursuant to a new law enacted by the State of California, transitional kindergarten (TK) is the first year of a two-year kindergarten program that uses a modified kindergarten curriculum. To be eligible, students must turn age 5 between Nov. 2 and Dec. 2 (for the 2012-13 school year).

According to the district's interim co-superintendents , there are currently 21 students enrolled in TK. The TK class will be held at Nesbit Elementary School. Roy explained that the Nesbit site was selected for two reasons.

"By having the TK class at centrally located Nesbit, it reduces travel time for families around the district, and Nesbit also had classroom space available," said Roy.

Roy added that teacher, Diane Sexton, a veteran in the district, will teach the TK class.
