If Roses Are Red, Violets Are Blue... This Month Is for You

What's your favorite poem? What poet will you read to celebrate National Poetry Month?

Did you know that April is National Poetry Month?

Stop by any of the four Redwood City libraries to pick up your favorite collection of poems or find yourself lost in the stanzas of your favorite poet.

The Academy of American Poets first declared April National Poetry Month in 1996 in order to honor poetry and the impact it has on American culture, education and economy.

They aimed to make poetry an integral part of American life and education. The board requested that schools implement appropriate poetry lessons in commemoration of the month.

What will you do to celebrate National Poetry Month? Share with us your favorite poem (or an original) and help us build our own lists of best poems and poets with which to celebrate!

This is my daughter Hannah's very first poem. She wrote it when she was 9: There’s A Cat - By Hannah B. There’s a cat in my house that likes to chase the mouse, who hides his cheese in a tight squeeze. There’s a cat on my street who’s name is Mr. Pete, who gets chased by the dog owned by Mr. Log. There’s a cat in the alley who’s owned by Sally. He’s looking for food ‘cause he’s in the mood. There’s a cat on my bed who’s happy and fed. As I rub his fur I hear him purr. March 23, 2011

Thank you Jennifer! Yeah, I thought it was pretty good for a 9 yr old, even if she is my child :)
