Cañada Professor Honored Today for White House Recognition

Dr. Amelito Enriquez was one of nine to receive the Presidential Award.

A professor who was recently for his mentoring achievements is being recognized by students, colleagues and community members on the campus this afternoon.

Professor Amelito Enriquez, who teaches math and engineering at the Redwood City community college, was one of nine individuals to receive the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring.

Enriquez attended a ceremony at the White House earlier this week.

Today at 3:30 p.m. the local academic community will honor the professor with student testimonials about his influence on their education and careers, event organizers said.

Enriquez, who lives in San Francisco, is helping spearhead an effort to send engineering students from community colleges to the University of California and California State University systems, while increasing the number of minority students in STEM programs, Canada College officials said.

Today's event will be held in the downstairs reception area of Building 8 at the campus, located at 4200 Farm Hill Blvd.
