Pipeline Project Update for Maple Street/Docktown/Bair Island

Docktown/Maple Street

We are working diligently this week on the newest phase of SBSA's pipeline project that will impact traffic along Maple Street from just before the entry to Docktown to the end of the street at the Sheriff's facilities and Shelter Network.

  • Under construction now is a by-pass detour road for this stretch beginning at the corner where the City of Redwood City has used the property for car dealers to park cars before taking them to their lots.
  • The east-west by-pass and closure of the "regular" Maple Street in this stretch will eliminate or reduce parking in many of the areas where parking has been permitted; therefore “no parking” signs have been erected.
  • The main entry to Docktown will be blocked and an alternate entrance is under construction and should be ready by Monday, October 28.  This alternate site for access will be clearly identified, starting just past the BIAC facility.

In front of Docktown the SBSA contractor will construct what is called a microtunneling Jacking Shaft, which we refer to as JS1 since there is another Jacking Shaft on Bair Island Road. The jacking shafts are the "launching" shafts for the microtunneling. During the week of November 4 we will start construction of a perimeter shoring system for the shaft, which will require six to eight days of driving several 65-foot steel sheet piles that create an enclosed shaft. This will create more noise than usual construction noise when the driving of the piles occurs, and will be restricted to 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays only.

Safety First

The modified, temporary entrance to Docktown and the Bypass Road for Maple St. are being constructed to provide safe access for everyone who accesses these areas.  Signs will be posted to provide direction for drivers and the temporary roads/entrances will have striping as well.  Additionally, at the Docktown entrance there will be a fenced area for pedestrians to be able to walk along the entrance separated from the vehicle traffic.  We ask that all pedestrian use this walkway rather than walk in the vehicle travel way for everyone’s safety.  The construction team will continually evaluate these measures and modify as needed to keep everyone safe.

The jacking shaft mentioned above will be approximately 45 ft. deep.  Fencing will be installed around this area to allow construction equipment to move about easily and safely.  It is also to protect the public.  Please stay out of fenced areas at all times until the work in complete and fencing is removed.  This is for your SAFETY!!

Bair Island Road/Bair Island

The microtunneling from the parking lot of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to Bair Island is about half finished, which will require increased activity on the Island next week for positioning of equipment.  There will be increased equipment movement on the island during the normal daytime work hours, which will in turn have some increased noise from recent weeks.  All noise levels are monitored and are within allowable levels for daytime construction.  When the microtunneling is finished for the Bair Island portion of the pipeline project, contractors will re-orient the equipment essentially headed in the other direction for microtunneling in that direction.  The at-ground equipment at the U.S. Fish &Wildlife Service parking lot will not be affected, but the positioning of equipment in the shaft will be.
