Tall Ships Return to Port for Educational Programs and Public Visits

The tall ships Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain, which are continuing their winter tour of California ports, plan an 18-day stay at the Port of Redwood City. The ships are scheduled to arrive on March 13 and offer public tours and excursions through March 30. 

The ships are also accepting reservations from area schools for one-hour and three-hour education programs for K-l2 students. Here's the ships' public schedule:

  • March 14: 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., walk-on tours.
  • March 15-16: 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., walk-on tours.
  • March 15-16: Noon to 5 p.m., battle sail.
  • March 15-16: 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., walk-on tours.
  • March 18-21: 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., walk-on tours.
  • March 22-23. Noon to 4 p.m., walk-on tours.
  • March 22-23: 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., battle sail.
  • March 25-28: 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., walk-on tours.
  • March 29-30: 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., walk-on tours.
  • March 29-30: Noon to 5 p.m., battle sail, $43-$63
  • March 29-30: 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., walk-on tours.

Walk-on tours are a chance to explore the vessels at the dock and speak with the crews. A $3 donation per person is appreciated. A reservation is not required.

Three-hour Battle Sails are recreations of a typical 18th-century style

naval skirmish close quarters maneuvers using the same commands and tactics of American warships of the Revolutionary War. Tickets are $43 to $63, depending on age. Purchase tickets online (see below) or call 800-200-5239.

 The two ships travel together to more than 40 West Coast ports, offering living history programs to young people and adults. Lady Washington was launched in 1989 for Washington State's centennial celebration. Launched in 1988, Hawaiian Chieftain specializes in K-12 education programs.
