VIDEO: Supervisor Candidates Campaign Heavily on Budget Issues

The six candidates said the forum was an important opportunity to speak directly to residents.

The budget-focused candidates' forum Wednesday night was crucial to letting the public know about the special election for the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors District 1 seat, candidates said.

The highly contested election is a marked contrast from 2008, when supervisors voted to fill then-Supervisor Jerry Hill’s vacated seat by appointment rather than hold a special election that costs millions of dollars, according to a county press release. For the first time in the County’s history, San Mateo County residents will vote to fill the District 1 seat purely by mail. Eliminating polling staff time will save the County approximately $500,000, candidate and Burlingame Mayor Terry Nagel said. Residents can still vote in person at either of the elections offices or drop off their ballot at any city hall in the county.

San Mateo County residents can mail in their ballots beginning April 4. Ballots must be received by May 3.
