Update on Downtown Construction & Parking

In the midst of Redwood City's massive construction boom, parking and mobility downtown is bound to be disrupted to a certain extent, the City says.

Redwood City is experiencing one of the biggest construction booms in its history currently, and with all the work underway or coming soon to downtown, comes certain shifts in local residents' and workers' mobility and parking options.

City spokesperson Malcolm Smith sent out a statement Friday reminding everyone about construction locations and chamges in parking availability.

  • Theatre Way is only open to vehicles on weekdays after 3 p.m. and all weekend. The Way is always open to pedestrians, however. All downtown businesses are open during the construction. Parking is available in the Jefferson and Marshall garages, the Main Street lot, and the Sequoia Station garage, as well as in the Middlefield Road parking lot (but remember to enter from the Jefferson side only). See the construction and parking map created by the City in the photos section of this article.
  • In the Middlefield lot, about 10 percent of the spaces are gone due to construction, but there are still about 200 spaces available. This spring, when work starts on the Redwood Tower project right on that lot, all of those spaces will be lost to construction. Once that project is complete, an equivalent number of spaces will be provided as part of the development - and, even more spaces, for evening and weekend public use, Smith explained. The developer is working with the City on plans to accommodate public parking downtown during construction.

Smith said, some further disruptions to mobility and parking are likely to occur as even more construction gets underway in the coming months, but that the City will do all it can to ease inconvenience for those who live and work in Redwood City.

"This construction boom is going to take full flight in 2013, and while the new residential units, offices and retail are good for the City, the construction impacts as the work takes place can be significant," he said.

"As the projects get going, there will be periodic lane closures and detours, construction noise and dust, and heavy equipment in the vicinity," he continued. "The City will work closely with the developers and contractors to minimize the disruption, but I'm sure [everyone can] understand that some level of inconvenience at and near these locations is unavoidable."
