Emergency officials in San Mateo County are reporting a problem that is affecting the county's phone service this morning. The problem began sometime before 7 a.m. and appears to be affecting calls to seven-digit numbers at the county government center, Office of Emergency Services district coordinator Jeff Norris said. Callers can still get through to 911, Norris said.

"The 911 system countywide was not affected in any way, shape or form," he said. Technicians are working to fix the problem, he said. Phone service is gradually being restored, and may be back to normal by about 9:30 a.m., Norris said.

The cause of the problem has not yet been determined.
