Price to Park May Rise

Bay Area politicians announced they will be spending Valentine's Day talking about raising the cost of parking in unincorporated San Mateo County, among other things, in a different venue. 

Usually the San Mateo County Board of Superivsors meets in Redwood City.

However, on February 14 they will meet at the Westin San Francisco Airport Hotel, which is located at 1 Old Bayshore Highway in Millbrae. 

"By holding the hearing near the Burlingame facility, County officials hope to make it easier for residents and staff members to attend," said Marshall Wilson, communications director for the county managers office.  

The supervisors will consider not renewing a lease for a long-term care facility in Burlingame as a way to reduce costs in the county.

They will also discuss ways to increase revenue. One of the ways they may do that is to increase a tax on businesses who run parking facilities at San Francisco International Airport by eight percent of their gross receipts. 
 
"Short and long term parking facilities located at the San Francisco International Airport generated approximately $80,926,693 in gross receipts during the 2010-2011 fiscal year," states a report prepared for the meeting.    

"Of the total gross parking revenue, $62,288,943 falls within the unincorporated county." 

The increased cost to operate the facilities could be passed on to travelers who wish to park there.

However, parking for the meeting at the Westin will be free. Take a ticket from the kiosk and bring it to the meeting to have it validated.

Discussion begins at 9 a.m. next Tuesday.
