Leaders of RWC & Guzman, Mexico to Enter Formal Sister City Agreement

Officials say the agreement will bring economic, educational, and cultural benefits to Redwood City and Mexico.

The City of Redwood City will be signing a formal "Sister City" agreement with Ciudad Guzman - a city in the state of Jalisco, Mexico that is the native city of a number of RedwoodCity residents. The agreement will be signed on December 6, 2013 at noon in City Hall, 1017 Middlefield Road.

Ciudad Guzman is located approximately 90 minutes south of Guadalajara and 60 minutes north of Colima. It is considered the is the educational "magnet" of west Mexico.

All members of the public are invited to join Mayor Aguirre and President (Mayor) Jose Luis Orozco Sanchez Aldana in this celebration of a sister relationship that will bring economic, educational and cultural opportunities to the residents of Redwood City and the citizens of Ciudad Guzman for years to come.

Redwood City's decision to form a sister city relationship with Ciudad Guzman was based on a number of criteria including quality of education, access to a Port, level of cultural events, and a population of a sufficient size to maintain the relationship.

"Redwood City is the cultural center of the Peninsula, and this sister agreement with Ciudad Guzman is only going to strengthen our ability to share, with our entire City, the diverse experiences that occur with a Sister City relationship and serve our significant Mexican-American and Latino communities," explains Mayor Aguirre. 

"This agreement will expand economic interests, advance new educational opportunities, and foster cultural exchanges that will help our cities increase understanding and appreciation of both our community's uniqueness and similarities."

In addition to their interest in starting a cultural center here in Redwood City, Federacion Jalisco is building business relationships and intends to foster relationships between local schools and those within Ciudad Guzman and Jalisco.
