Man Threatens Local State Senator's Life With Homemade Explosives & Gun

Investigators were forced to detonate homemade explosive devices found in the suspect's home in his front yard.

OUTSIDE SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- A "useable" bomb found Wednesday afternoon in the home of a man charged with threatening State Senator Leland Yee will be blown up Thursday in a trailer to contain the blast, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said late Wednesday.

Members of the CHP's Hazardous Device Detail, working with the Santa Clara County Sheriff's bomb squad, found a "useable device" - an explosive - at about 3 p.m. Wednesday at the man's home at 3131 Humboldt Ave. in Santa Clara, and plan to place it into the trailer to blow it up, said Sean Kennedy, spokesman for the CHP's Protective Services Division.

The detail had considered digging a hole in the front yard of the home to destroy it with an explosive charge as they did to another explosive device found Tuesday, but decided it would be safer to contain the explosion in the trailer, Kennedy said.

The discovery of the bomb came after the CHP and sheriff's deputies Wednesday resumed their search inside the residence of Everett Basham, 45, who was arrested for threatening or intimidating a public official and other charges Tuesday.

"We keep turning over a page and finding something new every time," Kennedy said.

Basham was arrested at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday by officers from the CHP's Protective Services Division. Two hours later, at about 12:45 p.m., officers from the CHP's SWAT unit executed a search warrant at Basham's home, observed dangerous chemicals in the residence, and notified the CHP's Hazardous Device Detail, Kennedy said.

The detail's officers went into the home and were later joined by the Santa Clara County Sheriff's bomb squad, Kennedy said.

"They found the precursors for homemade explosive items," Kennedy said.

As they catalogued and removed some of the items, officers became concerned that one article could be an explosive, Kennedy said. Rather than risk an explosion if they put it into a vehicle, the officers decided to blow it up in the home's front yard, Kennedy said.

"They dug two holes and lined them up with sandbags," Kennedy said. "They detonated around it and caused it to be destroyed without letting the item explode."

"For the safety of all, they decided it was safer to do it in the front yard," he said.

CHP officers and the sheriff's bomb squad continued searching Basham's home Wednesday, Kennedy said.

Basham is being held in Santa Clara County Jail without bail,  Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Jose Cardoza said. He was arrested on suspicion of making criminal threats, threatening or intimidating a public official, igniting or attempting to ignite an explosive device with the intent to commit murder, and unlawful possession of a concealed firearm, Cardoza said.

The CHP's Protective Services Division, based in Sacramento, investigates reports of threats to public officials in California, Kennedy said.

On Wednesday, Senator Yee's office released a statement indicating that Yee had received threats against him "in response to his legislative efforts to end gun violence," with both the explosive devices found in Basham's home as well as with "an illegally loaded firearm."

Yee has introduced several bills into the State Senate aimed at toughening California's gun control laws. In particular, he wants to limit the number of rounds magazines can hold, and which is designed to replace a normal magazine release button with a recessed button that can only be accessed through the use of a tool - such as, the tip of a bullet.

Yee argues that bullet buttons too easily get around California's assault weapon ban, which states that guns with both pistol grips and detachable magazines are considered assault weapons, and are therefore illegal.

Yee's bullet button bill, SB 249, was killed in Appropriations last year and never made into a law, which many speculate was due to widespread opposition to tougher gun control laws. However, following the tragic deaths in December's Newtown school shooting, Yee has been attempting to reintroduce the bill.

Yee announced he will give a press conference with members of the CHP's investigation team to discuss the threats made against him at 10:15 a.m. Thursday at the Hiram Johnson State Building in San Francisco.

Yee represents California's 8th State Senate district, covering San Francisco and most of San Mateo County, including Woodside.

@garypeter - the bomb/device was "useable," not "unusable." A useable device needs to be safely detonated, less it go off accidentally.

Fools cannot be contained! Our right to bear arms has nothing to do with hunting or even self protection it has everything to do with protecting our freedom and liberties against Tyranny and to make sure the constitution is upheld at all cost . It is the cornerstone of this great land. God Bless America

This country has gone to far in victimizing the criminal. Lets prosecute those bastards that break the law. Its like having a person speeding through a neighborhood at 55 in a 35 and the lawmakers vote for a solution and they come up with lowering the speed limit to 25 instead of ticketing removing drivers license etc. Come on Really

Are all the gun rights Nuts only in the USA ? Look at England, a country much older than the US. Their Police don't have a gun on their person even in bad areas. It is VERY difficult to purchase an automatic by anyone. The Constitution was written when hand guns could fire one or two times without reloading. Let's not get confused by our forfathes meaning.. And as to denying people with mental ilness we have to disregard the rights of privacy. People like a few of those who advocate violence for their rights to bear arms would probably be denied. For those who have had an argument with their wife husband etc., and threatened them as reported by their neibors or coworkers would be denied for having a possible mental illness problem.

They want background checks before you can buy a gun and most people would agree with that, but it won't stop there and you all know it. You let these scumbags get their foot in the door and before you know it they will outlaw everything down to BB guns. Eee,Feinstein are part of the power hungry group that will stop at nothing untill they get what they want. Just look at gay rights. They keep pushing untill they get what they want. Illegals in this country will get what they want too. There will never be an end to all of this crap.

They will have to change the name of this country to Sodom and Gomorrah.

Universal background checks will do nothing from stopping a criminal from using a gun in a crime if that is what his mind is set to do...A criminal has no interest in my 410 shotgun, my trap gun, nor my target rifle, nor my 22 pistol, nor my Uberti Henry rilfe, nor my 45 colt cowboy pistol...In fact he's not even interested in buying my AK 47 or my Bushmaster....So why dump stupid non enforceable laws like this on honest law abiding citizens who are quilty of committing no crime...There is no evidence to support the idea having me go through a back ground check is going to stop crimianls from getting a gun...The criminal is the law breaker we should be going after and not gun owners like you and me...Criminals don't want guns that are traceable...If you bought your gun legally it is traceable...Criminals only want guns that are stolen and have no paper trail leading law enforcement back to their origin...Criminals as not as stupid as these feel good legislators who pass these fivolous laws because even they know that such laws will not stop criminal activity or behavior...Dream on Liberal...Your dream is the closest you'll ever get to curbing gun violence in the state or Californification or any where else in this country!

The NRA never said such a thing...You liberals are all alike...You throw out your lies hoping they will convince some other fool that you know of what you are talking about!...Liberals are not do be trusted in any thing they say...Chances are they are feeding you pure BS to fit their own agenda!
oldgringo February 14, 2013 at 10:47 PM
Bombs are illegal to own and or to make...Again you must be one of these bleeding heart lying liberal as I have never heard of anyone going to AZ to buy a bomb...This is pure BS on your part!
oldgringo February 14, 2013 at 10:54 PM
Exactly...I laugh when the news reports that the police were out gunned...Citiizens are not allowed to own the same guns as the police or military do...We may own Bushmaster's that look like a military M16 but they are not...We can not own full automatic weapons like the police...Our guns are semi--automatic weapons which the liberals are costantly calling "assault" rifles...Assault rifle are those owned by the military and not civilians...Nor can we own C4 explosives like the military!...So if anyone is out gunned in this country it is we civilian gun owners...We are not allowed to have rocket launches or grenades, flame throwers of tanks, or other military weapons of destruction!
oldgringo February 14, 2013 at 10:57 PM
LIke in Chicago...the City rounded up 25,000 illegal guns or so they claimed...But no one went to jail...Why?...Don't they have enough prison cells to house 25,000 law breakers?

Why is it that Shooter's of Notoriety who seek out masses of Children with which to inflict their deeds of Evil...Or to cause bodily harm onto others...Are not to be found amongst the membership of the NRA?...Nor are they to be found amongst Christians...Nor amongst Republicans...Nor amongst Tea Party Folk...Nor amongst Conservative minded Americans...Whereas the Shooter's of such Notoriety are impaired with the same mental Illness as found amongst the Democrat's Party's strongest supporters...They being the Liberals, the Progressives, the Socialist, the Marxist and the Communist...These are the shooters who are inflicting harm unto others...These include Democratic Congress men and Senators who have recently been heard voicing their desire to kill NRA membes and other pro-gun advocate's...It is clear that those who would commit acts of evil against others are the so called die hard Democrats...To wit: If there is a problem with Mass Kiling and or other would be killers in this country...Joe Biden and Diane Feinstein need look no further than the Hate Baiter's within their own party...The answer is not whether guns should be banned...The obvious answer is to ban any Democrat and or users of Psycotic drugs from owning a firearm...This would futher enhance our democracy and further protect our Children from those who would do them harm!

What a bunch of crap. In the first place the second amendment and the rest of the constutution for that matter does fit the times. It was meant for the citizens to protect themselves against tyranny in government. Back then the gov had little guns and so did the citizens, now the gov has bigger guns and so do the citizens. Problem is the government sees that as a road block and they want to take away our big guns hence giving them more power to take from us and to control us. Not going to happen. Secondly there are more then just a few people who advocate for the second amendment and the right to bare arms. 3/4 of this country are for it. Maybe you should go to the next gun show and just watch what is going on around you. You will be amazed.
Kim Wilson February 15, 2013 at 01:23 AM
One issue: re: A "well-regulated militia." The nutty ones think the right to bear arms was to be able to fight against a tyranical government. Not true. Never meant or implied. The militia was military age men made available to support the government in the instance of riots etc. Do you crazies really think the government was setting up an armed force to fight the government? Get a brain. Any quotes attributed to the crafters of the 2nd amendment about fighting tyranny are not true. They are made up and simply false or taken way out of context.

What universal background checks do is "try" to weed out the loonies and people with a criminal record. It isn't fool proof because, as we can all painfully see, there are plenty of "loonies" that already have guns in America. But like any plan, this offers some chance of helping the situation. We have them in California and it's no big deal. Focusing on clips and weapons is wrong headed. That's what enrages gun owners of all ilks because it is clearly an example of "I don't know anything about your hobby, but I think it's a bad one and I want to take that right away from you; A little at a time".... Yee and Feinstein don't seem to get this. And I have supported Boxer and Feinstein for years but if a better alternative to Feinstein comes along, I may be on that bandwagon. Just grouping "all those senators" together is as ignorant as the rants that come from the left. Boxer has continued to be a valuable asset to California.

You need to realize that It was the People Setting up the Government. Remember it says WE THE People. All other countries theirs say The Government grants. Big difference. But You seem to un educated to grasp that Idea. Of course you will when the Constitution no longer exists and you become a slave to the Government that you all so happily wanted to exist. If you want crap laws go to another country. This country is still belongs to Americans.
Ian February 15, 2013 at 03:57 AM
You have lost your mind!!! Were did you get your education? Off of a shelf at Wal-mart? A "militia" refers to the citizens being armed. You have to realize something else, when they set up the constitution this country was new. these people who set up our early rules, (the constitution) were really citizens who had experienced the wrath of an over bearing government and this was set up to protect us against that in the future of our country. You really have no clue as to our history and the scary thing is, is that you vote. Geesshhh. History repeats itself because of foolish people such as yourself. You should really go back to school and get an education, that is if you have ever been there in the first place.

In 2011, SF Weekly writer Matt Smith penned an article which described a number of data points and allegations, including Sen. Yee’s being stopped twice in the Mission District’s hooker-row area by police for allegedly soliciting prostitutes, being caught shoplifting sun tan oil lotion while vacationing in Hawaii, accusations of his cooking the books at a non-profit where he was an administrator, being in the pocket of his campaign donors, and lying about where he lived to send his kids to a better school within San Francisco. In October of 2011, the website 8asians.com published a feature on Yee, [with the writer] stating, “I’ve only heard bad things from those who have had to deal with Yee in a variety of capacities, from a constituent who asked Yee to address an issue directly under his former professional expertise and current role as a legislator to sitting politicians.” Senator Yee has a long history of pandering to special interests and a palpable hostility towards American Constitutional principles. Prior to SB 249, his ban on so-called violent video games culminated in the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case of Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Association. The Supreme Court, in a 7-2 decision, found that Yee’s legislation violated the First Amendment rights of Americans.

The problem with universal background checks is, we basically have universal background checks now. Any licensed gun dealer is performing a background check. The buyer may not know, someone at a gun show may not know, but if you’re walking through a gun show, everybody’s doing background checks. The only people who are not subjected to a background checks are collectors giving guns to their sons or they’re selling one to their brother-in-law or something. The only way to enforce universal — the last .1 percent of guns that are transferred by collectors and so on — is to have universal gun registration. Universal background check means universal registration. Universal registration means universal confiscation, universal extermination,That’s how it goes in history. Do not fall for universal background checks............

It is OK for everyone to have an opinion but not OK to force yours upon the other! It doesn't mean that one is right or wrong. However when it comes to the constitution that law is the law of the land and will be upheld first by the Govt then by the people if the govt can't do it
