County to Re-Evaluate District Boundaries Lines for Supervisor Elections

An advisory committee is looking for members of the public who wish to weigh in.

County of San Mateo representatives said this week that, in light of the passage of Measure B on the November ballot, they will soon be re-evaluating the County's current district lines and "considering a boundary adjustment."

Measure B amended the County's charter to make supervisor elections "by district" instead of "at large."

In other words, in this past November's election, when the District 4 seat was up for grabs - which was won by Redwood City's Warren Slocum - the only voters who would have been able to vote would have been residents who live in District 4, had Measure B been in effect at the time.

Rather, since November's election was "at large," Slocum campaigned for his seat throughout the entire county, which reportedly contributed largely to him winning the seat. Later, much after the election, stats came out that showed that, had the election been "by district," Slocum's opponent, Redwood City School District Trustee Shelly Masur, would have been the victor.

This week, County representatives announced that the Supervisorial District Lines Advisory Committee is looking for new applicants, who wish to be a part of the discussion on amending district boundary lines.

"A committee is being formed to advice the Board of Supervisors. The County is soliciting applications from members of the public who would like to be appointed to the Committee," the County said in a statement this week.

However, if you want to participate, you must act quickly - the deadline to apply is this Friday, March 15 at 5 p.m.

Learn more about the process and find an application on the County's website.
