Candidate Filing Deadline For November 2012 Election Looms

Two candidates pulled papers for Memo Morantes' seat on the San Mateo County Board of Education, but have not completed them yet.

Redwood City and San Mateo County candidates in the Nov. 6, 2012 Presidential Election have until 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 10 to file their candidacy. 

The candidate-filing period for the November Presidential General Election opened on July 16. The law provides candidates with a 26-day window in which to file the necessary paperwork. 

Guillermo "Memo" Morantes, the current boardmember in District 7, will not be seeking re-election. Two candidates have declared their intent to run: Jo-Ann Sockolov, the president of the Redwood City Education Foundation and , the Executive Director of the California branch of the non-profit Citizen Schools.

The candidate-filing period will automatically be extended for five calendar days (until Aug. 15) for any office where an eligible incumbent such does not file to run for reelection.

“The Nov. 6, 2012, election features much more than the Presidential Race. There are several local offices and measures that are on the ballot for the voters’ consideration,” said Mark Church, Chief Elections Officer & Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder. “Information regarding each measure will be posted online as it is received.”  The complete Roster of Candidates, and local measures, is posted online and updated every evening.

The close of the candidate-filing period also marks the opening of the 10-day public review period when any member of the public has the opportunity to review resolutions, ordinances, tax rate statements, and candidate statements.

Any registered voter of the election jurisdiction, or the elections official, may seek a writ of mandate or injunction requiring any or all of the materials to be amended or deleted. This initial public review will run from Aug. 10-20.
