A couple of "Alpha Male" types took the tire iron out of his hands and smashed up his truck with it. http://www.almanacnews.com/news/show_story.php?id=12985 This story says that the Deputy searched the area near the intersection of woodside and canada road but couldn't find any cyclists... A blind man could find cyclists near the intersection of woodside and canada... The deputy talked to a couple folks... discovered what really transpired... and then went to tell the driver of the truck "sorry sir, looks like they got away" about 100 people witnessed the incident, and afterwards nobody seemed to know exactly who it was that did any vandaism. Find that a hard pill to swallow? In case you don't know the law.. it's 3 feet or more when passing a cyclist, you can kick an scream "monkey lawbreaking cyclists" all you want ... but let it be a lesson to you all... respect cyclists on the road or get your car smashed up. cops wont find the perp, and your cutrate insurance doesn't protect you from this kind of mayhem.
The driver is a slightly built man, about 130 / 140 lbs who lives in the Woodside area. He's known to the neighbors and has apparently driven aggressively around cyclists before.
After passing one group of cyclists, he apparently got out of his truck to try to start something, but he looked at the odds of 50 vs 1, got back in his truck and sped off. Woodside is thick with recreational road cyclists, especially on beautiful weekend days such as last Saturday. Conflicts with motorists who dislike the traffic congestion caused by anything other than more cars and trucks is frequent. In that large of a group, surely somebody had video running of one of these encounters?
And of course, now it comes out in some other local papers that this truck driver went out of his way to dangerously harass the bicyclists with his truck as he earlier passed them. Then, when much to his surprise, a group of them riding ~30 mph were able to catch up to him at the Woodside & Cañada Road stop sign, this clown expects the cops and the world at large to believe that he "cannot think of" why these bicyclists singled poor old insecure macho him out for what he tries to portray as an unprovoked attack. There was even a letter to editor from a woman who believes she may have been harassed by the same truck driver in that area in the past.
If I was sheriff... I wouldn't bother to interview the driver about the incident on the 26th... rather I would be going through his bank and phone records to see where he was in May of 2012. Perhaps the owner has had a chance to wash the blood off his car and fix the headlight ... but if the driver of the truck could be placed on the road at that time ... well ... he sure has demonstrated animosity towards cyclists.
a post on woodside nextdoor is making the driver out to be a teenage girl apparently ... even though a bunch of eyewitnesses said a man got out of the vehicle and tried to start a fight. and ... here is an interesting comment on the thread. BTW: I was "buzzed" by this truck while out riding on Canada Rd today (Friday afternoon.) The truck turned off & parked on Romero Rd, just off of Canada Rd, about a block North of Woodside Rd. Looks to be a local. makes me want to find the driver and question him/her.
Multiple witnesses confirm the following. Late model Dodge Ram Diesel With extended mirrors for hauling, license plate 6H69898 Passed Multiple cyclists at speeds estimated to be in excess of 60 MPH within 3 ft. Aggressively encroached cyclists at two stop signs, intentionally spewing diesel exhaust and burning tires. Swerved towards second group of cyclists after exchanging profanities with group he had just passed. These riders demounted their bikes and ran towards the shoulder in fear. Was Blockaded at woodside and canada rd by group of half dozen cyclists who pounded on his hood, mirrors, and windows. driver exits the vehicle briefly, presumably to start a fight, but gets back in. Driver then, runs his truck through the group attempting to bar his escape. was possibly accompanied by 2 other female passengers.
