Roosevelt Kindergarteners Lose Everything in Fire, Need Help

Kindergartener teacher Jennifer Torres is still collecting donations for the Kandil family.

On May 14, twins Maryam and Salma Kandil lost their Vera Avenue home in a two-alarm fire, according to Roosevelt parent Trish Taylor. Luckily no one was home thus no on injured. But their family lost everything they owned.

The kindergarteners, their mother and two older brothers, one at and the other at Woodside High stayed at a hotel for a few days after but then had to leave.

The family is in need of everything, but right now need food and clothing.

The twin girls wear a size 8 in clothes, and clothing gift cards would be useful for the mother and boys since their sizes weren’t known, Taylor said. The San Mateo Fire Department generously gave the family some gift cards, but more would be appreciated.

Kindergarten teacher Jennifer Torres has offered to take charge of collecting donations and will give them to the Kandil family.

Any clothing or food items as well as gift cards or money can be dropped off at Roosevelt's school office at 2223 Vera Avenue. If you have any questions, you may contact the school office at 369-5597 or email Jennifer Torres at jtorres@rcsdk8.net.

Thanks David. Some of us received an e-mail from Trish Taylor and have already dropped off money at Roosevelt. I hope that people who see this article will donate through your link. Will make it really easy for people to donate. Great idea!

I received an update from our school's Outreach Specialist: The family was in a hotel but they were supposed to move into a house on May 26th. They received enough clothing donations for the twin girls, but need money or gift certificates to purchase clothing for the mother and brothers as well as household items and food. For cash donations, please donate to Wells Fargo Bank donation account #3141234918 (under the grandfather's name: Jose Linares) or The family is still in great need of gift cards to Target, Safeway, Old Navy. They can be dropped off in the Roosevelt Office M-F 7:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.--please label for Kandil Family. Thanks to everyone for the outpouring of support and generosity so far just from a single email to a Yahoo group! This is truly a wonderful community.
