The Redwood City Police Department announced it will hold a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint later this week.
The checkpoint will operate at an undisclosed Redwood City location on Thursday between 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Police say they will contact drivers passing through the checkpoint, looking for signs of impairment and check for proper licensing.
DUI penalties include jail time, license suspension and fines and fees that with insurance increases can cost upwards of $10,000.
Police say such checkpoints reduce alcohol-involved crashes, saving lives and preventing injuries.
Checkpoints such as this one are funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
