Recology San Mateo County Gives $1K to Local Police Activities Leagues

The money donated will provide toys throughout the year to county children who are victims of tragic events.

Recology San Mateo County on Monday gave a check for more than $1,000 to local police activities leagues (PALs).

The employee-owners of Recology San Mateo County chose the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Activities League and the Redwood City Police Activities League Toy and Book Drive as the beneficiary of this year's Employee Owner Charity Giving Program, Recology officials said.

Each year during the holidays, Recology San Mateo County asks its employees to help an organization within the community that benefits the residents of the community in a positive way.

They ask employees to give whatever they can, from emptying their pockets of loose change to any monetary dollar amount they can spare.

The check donated to the police activities leagues on Monday totaled $1,073.

The San Mateo County-Redwood City Toy and Book Drive provides toys not only during the holidays, but throughout the year to children who are victims of tragic events.

The toys and stuffed animals are used to bring some sense of security to children in difficult times.

The San Mateo County-Redwood City Holiday Toy and Book Drive is a cooperative effort that is orchestrated by members of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff’s Activities League, CARON program, Redwood City Police Department, Redwood City Fire Department, Redwood City Police Activities League, Redwood City Parks Recreation and Community Services, San Carlos Fire Department and Woodside Fire Department.

This effort brings the holiday spirit right to the doorstep of many needy families. With help from the Fair Oaks Community Center and a corps of volunteers, this annual event has become a tradition in the Redwood City community and now other areas of San Mateo County.

If you would like to make a donation to the San Mateo County-Redwood City Toy Drive, please contact one of the following people:

  • Sergeant Dan Smith, Redwood City Police Department: 650-780-7601

"$1,073"
That's about how much gets stolen out of my recycling bin annually.
Buck Shaw December 26, 2012 at 02:45 pm
Once it goes into the bin it belongs to Recology. Besides isn't it helping someone who is in a way working for it. Instead of asking the Government for money? Don't forget a single 100 Lb. lot of cans only, is worth $400 dollars at the scrape yard.

Would that be a Robin Hood scenario?
Would the same anology apply for taking money out of the donation bin at church services or skimming donations intended for disasters or are there different standards for stealing?

I don't understand - what does that have to do with the very generous donation by the Recology employees tovthe toy drive?

"I don't understand"
I know from what I see every week that most of the valuable recyclables are stolen systematically every week from Recology containers that must cut drastically into the bottom line and if they had been collected maybe the employee/owners donation to the toy drive could have been more substaintual. Although it states on these containers that it is illegal to remove any of its contents there is no active enforcement in place to curtail the activity. Charitable donations from any source are a huge benefit to those in need and until you are in a position to need them then you truly cannot comprehend the signifigance of their positive impact into ones life, especially that of a child.

Good question, cipiazza. This is probably related to a sewage pipeline replacement project takingRead More place nearby.

Vanessa and ctpiazza, Buckley Stone at Pete's Harbor says it is because some time ago the CityRead More dredged near muni and ran a pipe under to spill it out at Bair Island, so it is actually the remains of rotting sea life. He knows so much about this area having been at Pete's for 20 years and knowing so much about the area the tides and the nature and land around here.
