POLL: Should California Abolish the Death Penalty?

Initiative to abolish capital punishment qualifies for November ballot.

Redwood City residents will have a chance this fall to vote on an initiative that would abolish the death penalty in California if passed. The initiative just qualified for the ballot and would also immediately convert the sentences of nearly 700 Death Row inmates to life sentences without the possibility of parole.

In addition to the "It's inhumane" reason for supporting this initiative, it costs $184 million to continue to maintain the death row system - money better spent on programs to reduce the recidivism of non-capital offense inmates.

I'll add that it costs some %150,000 to house, feed death row inmates compared to some $50,000 for the general inmate population. Replacing the death penalty with Imprisonment without parole will save $$100k per each of those nearly 700 inmates currently on death row. When I saw Marc Klaas on TV during the searches for the 15 years old in Morgan Hill, I was reminded of his daughter Polly who was kidnapped and murdered in October 1993 when she was 12 years old. Richard Allen Davis was convicted of her kidnapping and murder in August 1996.at the age of 42. He is now 58 years old and in the last 16 years we taxpayers have spent approximately $2.4 million on his upkeep not to mention untold millions on his defense, appeals, etc. From a financial standpoint voting to abolish the death penalty is a no-brainer.
