Police Believe Apartment Fire Wednesday Was Likely Arson

The blaze destroyed two apartments.

Police and fire personnel in Redwood City believe a suspicious that destroyed two apartments last Wednesday was likely caused intentionally, police said this weekend.

Fire and police investigators are now investigating the fire, which displaced about 25 residents, as an arson, according to police.

Police and fire crews responded to the blaze just before 12:30 a.m. Wednesday at the eight-unit apartment building located at 523 Stambaugh St., authorities said.

The fire also spread to the building's carport, damaging multiple vehicles, according to fire officials.

Fire crews brought the flames under control in about an hour.

In addition to the two gutted units, the rest of the building sustained major structural damage and has been deemed unsafe for residents, police said.

Six of those residents were given temporary housing through the American Red Cross, according to police.

No firefighters or residents were injured in the blaze.

Anyone with further information about the apparent arson, including any video footage of the fire, is asked to contact Redwood City police Detective Cook at (650) 780-7697.
