Police Arrest Man For Credit Union Robbery

Transient man in Belmont suspected of robbing the Provident Credit Union on Redwood Shores Parkway in Redwood City.

Police arrested a 31-year old man in Belmont Wednesday, suspecting him of a robbery that took place in Redwood City.

Carmen Joseph Polito, 31, went to the Provident Credit Union in the 200 block of Redwood Shores Parkway at about 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, according to police records.  Police say he went to a bank teller and handed the person behind the counter a note that demanded money.  The teller gave him the cash that was in their drawer.  Polito is said to have repeated this action and collected more cash at a second teller at the bank, according to Redwood City police records. This time, he demanded the money verbally, according to police.

After he left the bank on foot, Redwood City police officers arrived and reviewed evidence left at the scene. Meanwhile, detectives alerted county law enforcement officials that this man was wanted for questioning about the robbery.

A police officer in Belmont saw Polito walking near Ralston Avenue on Wednesday at about 5 p.m.  He used the description of the man who committed the robbery and determined this was the man before him. He took him into custody.

Detective Chris Winn is asking people with information about the robbery or Carmen Joseph Polito to call (650) 780-7697.
