Motorhome Fire Congests 280

This is the fourth major accident on this stretch of Interstate Highway 280 this month.

Traffic on southbound Interstate 280 was at a standstill Tuesday morning, while crews cleaned the remains of a motorhome fire.

The motorized home burst into flames at about 10 a.m., according to California Highway Patrol Officer Art Montiel. Two men inside the motorhome evacuated the vehicle at about 10:14 and watched first responders try to stop the fire from the side of the road, according to CHP records.

People driving on 280 were doing the same, causing congestion in both directions. Most of the traffic congestion experienced by drivers took place on the southbound side of the road, after CHP closed the Farm Hill on ramp at 10:19 a.m.

Two lanes of the road were closed until 11:41 a.m. after the motorized home was towed.  Clean up ensued for a few hours. The Farm Hill on ramp was reopened at about 3 p.m.

This is the fourth major accident on this stretch of I-280 this month.

On July 22, a man from Redwood City was killed while attempting to help crash victims on Interstate Highway 280.

280 was "a parking lot" on the morning of July 18, according to Patch readers, after two vehicles crashed, forcing CHP to close down two lanes.

Later that day, a man was ejected from his car onto the highway, after he tried to avoid crashing into another vehicle.
