It's no secret mountain lions live in San Mateo County.

In fact, some can even be spotted roaming the hills -- and even our backyards -- from time to time.

Mountain lions actually exist in more than half of California, and generally live wherever deer are present.

Patch has put together this interactive map of all reported mountain lion sightings in San Mateo County in 2012.

Residents are advised to avoid contact with a mountain lion. If one is seen, do not run and try to appear as large and noisy as possible. For more information on mountain lions, visit www.keepmewild.org.

If your scared of mountain lions, you might want to move to the big city. What's the chance of being attacked.5 million to 1,I think you should be more worried about attacks in RWC by some thug. We worry more a prey than predators. Ken S

About a year ago on my wooded property on the edge of San Carlos near Palomar Park, I found a deer lying on its side with the side eaten out of it. I assume a mountain lion got it.

The map is for sightings this year, Buck. I think it's kind of interesting to see how many their were since January.

@Buck, perhaps you missed the story ... but the autopsy on that face-eating "cannibal" showed only marijuana -- no evidence of the "bath salts" the police had speculated the guy had been on.
