UPDATE: HazMat Team and Firefighters Respond to Unknown Substance in Emerald Hills Neighborhood

The container with the substance is on the side of the street as the Hazardous Materials team and Redwood City Fire Department cautiously examines it.

UPDATE: Fire fighters determined that the material was not harmful and primarily consisted of dirty water.

The last fire engine cleared out at approximately 12:45 p.m.

and the San Mateo County Hazardous Materials Team responded to an unknown “apple juice”-colored substance at the intersection of Emerald Hills Road and Bret Harte Drive at approximately 10 a.m. Friday, according to a neighbor.

The fire department confirmed that engines were sent out to investigate the matter.

Resident Mary Askins said she first noticed the container Thursday afternoon but did not find it unusual.

“It’s a plastic milk jug half full with a liquid substance that looks like apple juice,” she said.

Despite the large number of responders, no sirens or alerts could be heard in the neighborhood.
