Duo Poses as Magazine Solicitors, Steal Jewelry from Residence

A man and woman posing as magazine solicitors gained entry into a San Carlos home Saturday night.

A man and woman posing as magazine solicitors in the early evening hours on Saturday gained entry into a San Carlos residence and stole a substantial amount of jewelry, police said.

The San Carlos bureau of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office sent out an electronic warning to residents urging them to be cautious of unwanted solicitations.

Police said the duo gained entry into the house after one of the suspects asked to use the restroom. While inside, the theft took place.

“Please do not engage solicitors nor allow them into your residence,” said Officer Vincent Bedolla.

This is the exact same thing that happened to me in Belmont back in April or May. They come down the block they seem to know the name of your neighbors and say that they are considering buying from them. After I told her that I was not interested 6 or 7 times she asked if she could use our bathroom. I told her that would not be a good idea and she said ok and left.

I know this may not be possible for some residents but, whenever someone is at the door and we are not expecting anyone, our 125 lb. Akita/Shepherd mix is the first "esident from within our home to greet them and if they persist, the screen door is slowly opened so that she can get "acquainted" with them.

People should ask more questions when unwanted solicitations arrive at their door steps. Ask for ID. If you don't want them there, don't let them in. THe more channels, both online and traditional, that report these types of crimes, the more informed people will be. I don't to sound alarmist but since we've had our house broken into and have told others, we're finding similar experiences.
