CHP Releases Fourth of July Arrest Reports

The California Highway Patrol accumulated data about DUIs and fatal collisions that took place during the Fourth of July holiday.

Arrests during the Fourth of July holiday more than tripled in California during the 2013 Fourth of July holiday, according to data released by the Redwood City Area California Highway Patrol Office.

Statewide, CHP officers responded to 29 collisions that resulted in a fatality, an increase over the amount in 2012, which was five. One of those took place on the Peninsula.  

The Central Valley had the highest number of fatal collisions, with six in 2013.  During 2012 there was only one in that area of the state.

This year, 1,559 people were arrested for driving under the influence, which is more than last year. In 2012 CHP officers arrested 479 people and charged them with DUIs.

CHP considers holidays a "maximum enforcement period."  

Last year, CHP started the holiday at 6:06 p.m. on July 3 , a Wednesday, and ended it at midnight on July 4.  In 2013, the holiday period began at the same time, but ended on the 7th at midnight.  Th
