Bicyclist Killed on Skyline Was Former Amazon CFO Joy Covey

Fremont driver, 22, turned in front of victim, who collided with his minivan.

The woman bicyclist hit and killed by a minivan on Skyline Wednesday was former Amazon CFO Joy Covey, according to a report on PandoDaily, a Silicon Valley blog.

According to her Facebook page, Covey, 50, studied at Harvard and Stanford and worked at Amazon from 1996 to 2000.

1999 Forbes article states that Covey lived in Belmont for a time while commuting to Amazon in Seattle.

The daughter of a doctor, Covey grew up in San Mateo, and at 16 quit San Mateo High School and earned an equivalency degree. She graduated from Fresno State University at 19 and earned the second-highest score in the nation on the accounting exam.

Covey, a Woodside resident, was the CFO at Amazon during its initial public offering. She was most recently serving on the board of trustees at the San Francisco-based National Resource Defense Council, council officials said.

"She encapsulated the heart and soul of NRDC and will be so deeply
missed by all the NRDC family," council president Frances Beinecke said in a
statement.

"Her adventurous and indomitable spirit was infectious and she
constantly challenged us to reach greater heights," Beinecke said.
According to the CHP, Covey was riding downhill on state Highway 35
near Elk Tree Road when she was struck by 22-year-old Fremont man driving uphill.

The driver made a left turn onto Elk Tree Road directly in front of Covey, who
crashed into the right side of the van, the CHP said.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.
