Jewelry Store Clerks Give Armed Robbers a Run for Their Money

The three suspects never expected the jewelry store clerks would be armed, too - and that they would chase them down when they fled the store.

Three suspects arrested for the attempted armed robbery of a jewelry store in unincorporated Redwood City will soon stand trial for the crime.

Raymond Lewis Bradford, 27, of East Palo Alto; Rodney Lavince Mitchell, 21, of Newark; and Robert Wheller Jr., 25, of Hayward; entered a jewelry store on Middlefield Road in unincorporated Redwood City last month on Jan. 16, armed with a handgun, a hammer and a club, respectively.

The San Mateo County District Attorney's Office reported that Bradford pointed the gun at one of three clerks in the store and demanded money.

However, the suspects were unprepared for the fact that the jewelry store clerks were armed, too.

The District Attorney's Office said, "One clerk pulled out a firearm hidden beneath the counter and pulled back the slide, making an audible noise."

When the suspects heard the unmistakable noise of a gun being cocked, the District Attorney's Office said they all took off running, fleeing outside to where a car was waiting for them.

The clerks were not going to let them get away so easily, though.

The District Attorney's Office said the jewelry store employees jumped into their own car and took off after the suspects. One of the clerks called 9-1-1 as they pursued the robbers.

A San Mateo County Sheriff's deputy who was the first responder to the call took over the chase of the vehicle when he caught up with the cars on the road.

The suspects' car crashed on Bay Road in Redwood City. The three men got out of the vehicle and took off on foot.

Sheriff's deputies found Bradford and Wheller hiding near the scene of the crash, as well as a pillowcase, gloves and the firearm used in the attempted armed robbery.

Mitchell got away, but Sheriff's deputies caught up with him the next day and arrested him as well.

The three men are currently in custody. Bradford, as the suspect who weilded the gun in the attempted robbery, is being held on $500,000 bail. The two other men are being held on $150,000 bail each.

The three suspects are due to appear in court on April 16.

Laurel, your article hit home with me, also. I often tell people how happy I am to live in RedwoodRead More City. Your post describes some of the reasons why very well. Our town is a real community. As you described so well, there is a wonderful ease of connecting with people here and a sense that we can all be who we are and be welcome here. That is very special. Also, I feel that the wide variety of Redwood City's activities (like the Salsa Festival, but also all the remarkable diversity of events that happen all the time in Courthouse Square, cool events at the libraries, the Farmer's Markets, etc.) make this a vibrant, fun place to live. There are always interesting things to do here, most of which are either free or are very affordable. I feel like RWC's elected and appointed officials and other employees who provide key services for the citizens here (teachers, police, firefighters, librarians, Parks and Recreation Dept. employees, utilities employees, etc.) really care about its residents. Not only are there constantly fun things to do that are free or affordable, there are also many classes and education opportunities to support our needs in so many ways (looking for a job, preparing for an earthquake, etc.). It feels like a well-run city. I have only lived here a few years, but I am quite happy here and am very glad to be a resident of Redwood City. Thanks for writing this article!

Oh Laura..I so do enjoy all your posts but this one hit home. I too went to Sequoia and left homeRead More in my early 20's to begin my career. I lived in Manhattan and found it difficult to find the funds to fly home for visits for many years, but i would when I could, and when I moved to Los Angeles it was easier to get home for a visit but I never ever thought I'd live here again. In 1999 my parents passed and the old house sat vacant for a couple of years and then I had a brilliant idea....why not move home! I sold my house in LA and moved back to RWC in 2003 and I've NEVER BEEN HAPPIER! One day you too may wonder away - for your career or perhaps your husbands career, but just know...Redwood City is always here to welcome you back. Thomas Wolfe said "you can't go home again" - but you can!
