What's a Housing Element?

This year every city in California is expected to revisit its plans for how it will provide housing for its residents over the next eight years.  This plan is called a Housing Element and is a huge opportunity for residents to have input on future housing plans.  In recent years hundreds have been displaced through the loss of truly affordable housing, and we currently do not have ordinances in place which would ensure that new housing includes a percentage of units which are affordable for seniors, working families, and others.  Many of our businesses are challenged with the inability to hire and keep employees, it is reported that 80% of our emergency workers live on the other side of bridges, and child care and elder care workers can longer afford to live in Redwood City.

With that in mind, the Local Housing Committee is hosting a special meeting on Wednesday, to educate about the Housing Element and to talk about how we can let the City know what’s important to us!  Karyl Eldridge, veteran leader with San Francisco Organizing Project/Peninsula Interfaith Action, will talk about the need and the challenges we face; Diana O’Dell, Senior Planner for the City of Redwood City, will make a presentation on what the Housing Element is, its timeline, and how we can become engaged, and Josh Hugg, from Housing Leadership Council, will review the opportunities that exist to create housing opportunities for residents of all income levels.  We meet from 6:00 to 8:30 (light dinner included) in the Community Room of the Main Library. Join us.
