On November 26, 2012 Leyla was riding her bicycle to school when she was killed in a collision with a pickup truck. The incident occurred on southbound Alameda de las Pulgas, south of Jefferson Avenue in Redwood City. The terms of the resolution are confidential and were not disclosed.

“This resolution helps set the record straight,” said Gary Brustin, attorney for the Beban

family. “The family has been frustrated and extremely disappointed by the initial investigation.”

Through Mr. Brustin, the family released the following statement:

“We would like to express our profound thanks to the people of Redwood City and beyond who have shown us great love and support over the past 15 months. While nothing can truly alleviate the crushing pain we feel over Leyla’s death, the outpouring of sympathy we have felt has let us know we are part of a community that cares about us and about Leyla. We are very grateful for that, and for, at last, being able to present the facts of the accident based on our investigation. Our hope is that drivers, bicyclists, and law enforcement will be more attentive to the rules of the road so no other family will have to experience what we have gone through.”

The family has created a nonprofit corporation in Leyla’s name which is dedicated to encouraging middle and high school students to pursue their passion for creative writing. The nonprofit, The Leyla Beban Young Authors Foundation, holds a writing competition to award scholarships and prizes to promising young writers, and provides support for writing classes to underserved communities. “Leyla loved to read and write stories and we created the foundation to encourage kids like her,” said Marc Beban, Leyla’s father and President of the foundation. “We felt the need to do something positive in the world and this seemed the most appropriate way to honor Leyla’s memory.”

Details about the foundation can be found on their website at www.blue4beban.org.
