By Bay City News Service:

A 46-year-old man allegedly beaten to death Monday night in unincorporated Redwood City has been identified as Michael Gonzales, according to the San Mateo County coroner's office.

Deputies responded at 8:15 p.m. Monday to a report of two men fighting in the 3100 block of Middlefield Road and found Gonzales, a Redwood City resident, lying motionless on the ground, according to San Mateo County sheriff's spokeswoman Deputy Rebecca Rosenblatt.

Emergency responders tried to revive Gonzales but he was pronounced dead. Rosenblatt said the alleged assailant, 53-year-old Paul Ahern, was found standing nearby.

Ahern, also of Redwood City, was arrested on suspicion of murder.
