Good news on Southside flooding

One of the very under-reported bits of news coming out of city hall is a potential resolution to the perennial flooding of Friendly Acres and the mobile home parks south of Woodside Road.  For example, the picture with this post is in front of my driveway after 30 minutes of steady rain on Saturday, AND with the storm drains flowing freely.
In a casual conversation with city council member Jeff Gee, I learned that the Redwood City, in cooperation with the conservancy managing the restoration of the salt ponds donated by Cargill; and with funding assistance from Atherton and Menlo Park (where most of the flood water comes from) will be turning the ponds into flood-water basins during heavy rains. This plan is similar to what was being offered by Cargill and the Saltworks development project that has been put on hold pending rulings from the Army Corps of Engineers regarding jurisdiction on planning and development.
Gee explained that the ponds are beyond restoration to wetlands, and using them for flood control is the best use of the land.  That is something that Cargill and other environmental agencies have been stating for sometime, but keeps getting buried in the rhetoric or the debate over what to do with them.
This is extremely good news for residents of Friendly Acres and Redwood Village.  Imagine not being cut off from the rest of Redwood City when we have heavy rains.  I'm looking forward to this.
